For an accurate shade match, it is best to have the client sitting in natural light when you do the shade assessment. If natural light is not available, a white fluorescent light is the best substitute. Try to avoid using yellow or other colored lights.

Total accuracy isn’t crucial when shade matching, and in cases where the client has teeth that are different colors it isn’t possible. However the more careful you are about determining an accurate shade match; the more satisfied the client will be with the treatment when they are shown the dramatic difference. Keep in mind that, at minimum, you should give the client a hand mirror so that they can follow along as you perform a shade matching. This will help alleviate any disagreements over how many shades their teeth have improved following the treatment.
